GUIDE FOR USERS OF OCLC'S FIRST SEARCH DATABASES
If you have a GIAL Library card and access to the
Internet, you are entitled to unlimited use of an electronic reference
service to which the Library has subscribed. This service is known
as First Search: a world of information online.
First Search is available over the Internet and is
located at the following URL: http://newfirstsearch.oclc.org
There are currently 10 bibliographic databases that
can be searched:
ERIC - contains annotated references to non-journal material
issued in the monthly Resources in Education and to journal articles
issued in the monthly Current Index to Journals in Education.
Language and linguistics is one of the subjects covered. The dates
covered are from 1966 to date.
WORLD CAT - a database of over 52,000,000 books (primarily)
held by libraries around the world. The dates covered are from
1000 BC to the present.
ARTICLE FIRST - index of articles from the contents pages
of over 12,000 journals. There are over 12.7 million records.
The dates covered are from 1990 to the present.
ELECTRONIC COLLECTIONS ONLINE (ECO) - 4600 scholarly electronic
journals are indexed, with some full-text titles. The dates covered
are from 1995 to the present.
PAPERS FIRST - index of over 2,380,000 papers presented
at conferences worldwide. The dates covered are from 1993 to the
present.
PROCEEDINGS FIRST - an index of worldwide conference proceedings,
with over 74,000 records. The dates covered are from 1993 to the
present.
The other databases are World Almanacs, GPO (government resources),
Medline (medical resources), and Union List (periodicals held
by member libraries).
IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE AUTHORIZATION AND PASSWORD FOR THE USE
OF FIRST SEARCH, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN BELOW THAT YOU UNDERSTAND
AND WILL NOT VIOLATE THE RULES OF OUR LICENSE FOR FIRST SEARCH.
1) This authorization is for your personal use as
a GIAL Library card holder.
2) The authorization number and the password are
not to be given to any other individual, organization, or business
concern.
