AL 5398 Seminar in Applied Linguistics:
Translating the Psalms as Poetry and Song

Fall 2009, Session 1 (July 22 to August 18, 2009)
Brenda Boerger, Instructor

After completing this course, students will be able to apply principles of accuracy, clarity, naturalness, and artistic effectiveness to a poetic translation of the Psalms, using the poetic forms of a target language. They will study the poetic and song features, techniques, and genres of Hebrew and English, as a basis for learning how to recognize and analyze poetic and song forms of other languages. They will be exposed to this process through examples from a less-widely-studied language and then be able to constructively evaluate examples of poetic and song translations from such vernaculars, as well as from English. Students will apply what they have learned in a final research and/or production project.

Prerequisite:
AL5315 Theory and Practice of Translation or
LD5357 Oral Tradition and Literature
or
LD5384 Expressive Form Analysis
or
Permission of instructor.
