LD 5343 Principles of Multilingual Education

(3 semester hours)
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. discuss in detail the intersection of education and multilingualism in developing countries
  2. discuss knowledgeably the major perspectives on bilingualism
  3. discuss and explain the phenomenon of bilingualism as a social pattern
  4. discuss and explain research findings on the cognitive dimensions of bilingualism
  5. discuss and explain research findings on the education consequences of bilingualism
  6. define and compare various models of multilingual education
  7. describe the major approachs to multilingual education which have been tried
  8. discuss and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the major approaches to multilingual education
  9. describe the major experiments in multilingual education which have been launched in the last 40 years
  10. discuss and describe in detail the implementational issues involved in organizing a multilingual education program, especially in a developing country
