Dr. Peter Unseth Presenting at ILA Conference

On Friday, April 20, Dr. Peter Unseth will be speaking at a plenary session of the International Linguistic Association’s annual conference at St. John’s University in New York. The conference theme is “Language and Religion” and his paper will be “Bible Translators Lead the Way in Valuing Creole Languages.” His paper shows that through history, starting with Yiddish, where creole languages are written and developed for new uses, Bible translators have been in the forefront of using creoles in this way. This is because Bible translators have generally prioritized comprehension of the message over elegance or purity of the language.
